Identity is a complex thing and comes from a sense of affinity or belonging, among other things. People, places, things, and experiences with which we identify soak in over time, and psychological bits and pieces accumulate to reveal an individual that is wholly original, and unique in every way.
This piece was inspired by recurring thoughts about biography and the way identity becomes fused with the people we’ve been at different times and places in life. We are the sum total of all our experiences – the roles we’ve played, the activities performed, the communities we’ve been a part of. Cultural shifts in attitude about identity heralds an age of broader rules and definitions. May how the world sees us and how we see ourselves be better intersected with the truth.
